Located at the Battery and Outer Battery Road intersection, a memorial designed by sculptor Luben Boykov pays tribute to Craig Dobbin, the Newfoundland entrepreneur who built a global helicopter services company. Former premier Brian Tobin remembered Dobbin as “a great son of Newfoundland and Labrador.”
When asked about the design concept of the artwork, Boykov says, “The composition, shape, and texture of the sculpture are reminiscent of patterns created by a helicopter hovering over water or grass.” The sculpture comprises 1,200 bronze driftwood twigs configured vortex-like in three pieces, resembling “a frozen representation of rotary motion.” Boykov says his artwork is intended to capture Dobbin’s “energetic character and vision” - qualities that have inspired many others.
Luben Boykov was born in 1960 in Sofia, Bulgaria, and immigrated to Canada in 1990. He is a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Sofia. He has been inducted into the Royal Canadian Academy and awarded the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal for his extensive and widespread output of sculptures and exhibitions.
