Hans Melis created the statues of John Cabot, Sir Wilfred Grenfell, and bust statues of politicians and the founders of Memorial University. The statue of Italian explorer John Cabot, commemorating his landfall at Cape Bonavista in 1497, was unveiled in 1971. However, the claim of Cabot’s landing in Bonavista remains debatable among scholars.
Hans Melis was born in the Netherlands in 1925. He studied at the Academies of Fine Arts in The Hague, Munich and Dresden. He emigrated to Canada in the 1958 and became the official sculptor of Newfoundland under Joey Smallwood.
